The Tony Awards committee and producers can rot in hell. WTF was that awful mashup opening? Poison? Really? Cole Porter is spinning like a turbine in his grave. And they're either all miked terribly or the sound tech should be fired. At least Liza's mike worked. F the Tony's. The world goes round indeed. Ok, the ending with the cast of Hair worked, but the sound still sucked.

And the cast of Hair is amazing in person.

I got into a heated discussion with a co-worker about this SNL skit yesterday. I saw the episode in question, and didn't even really remember the "joke" (although it is arguably more directed at the NYT itself), because the sketch was so terrible, which is true of just about everything on SNL these days except the openings.

Anyhow, my co-worker (a 50-something mother with an uber-conservative husband) looked like she was ready to blow when I went into my standard freedom of speech routine. I really couldn't understand the sensitivity, especially since these kinds of perceived attacks have nothing to do with the Obama campaign. Also, if the shoe was on the other foot, and Obama had a pregnant daughter, you can be sure the standards would be different (a co-worker even brought up the oft-cited reaction to Jamie Lynn-Spears' pregnancy as proof of this double standard- more evidence that we have gone way down the rabbit hole this campaign season).

Then I remembered something else this morning, about McCain's joke from 1998 about Chelsea Clinton:

"Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno."

I wonder if the level of outrage among conservatives was the same, especially since this joke was made by, oh, THE CURRENT REPUBLICAN NOMINEE FOR PRESIDENT. Somehow I doubt it.

Well, here it is, just what the world needs: another blog.

Why Artdroppings, you ask? Since I'm a 38 year old art school undergrad, it seemed like the right thing to name it (sorta like George Carlin's "Brain Droppings"). I guess I'm just sharing my experience of being a returning student to a field that is often preoccupied discovering hot young artists. Also, art school (and the art world for that matter) is full of so much bullshit, which I will happily provide my share of here. You're welcome.

I'll be publishing photos of my work (I'm technically a sculpture major, but my interests wander quite frequently into other media), and may see this blog as some kind of diary of ideas, another "sketchbook" if you will. Maybe some version of it will wind up in my work, who knows.
